Memento : Christopher Nolan

 

I will introduce the movie director, Christopher Nolan, and his movie "Memento". First, I will introduce Christopher Nolan. He was born on July 30, 1970 in England. He is 50 years old now. His main profession is film director, but he is active as a film producer and screenwriter. His nationalities are British and the American. In 1990, he married Emma Thomas.

Second, I will tell you about some popular movies by Christopher Nolan. They are “Inception”, “Tenet”, and “The Dark Knight”. “Inception” was released in the United States in 2010 and the genre is SF action. Japanese actor Ken Watanabe was to act in this movie. “Tenet” was released in 2020 and the genre of SF. This movie has a very long show time of about two and half hours. “The Dark Knight” was released in 2008 and the genre is comic fantasy. This is a live-action movie based on the American comic “Batman”.

Third, I will tell you about my recommended movie. My recommended movie is “Memento”. “Memento” was released in the United States in 2000 and the genre is mystery. This movie was directed by Christopher Nolan. This movie is based on the short story “Memento Mori” written by Christopher Nolan’s younger brother Jonathan Nolan.  The main characters in this movie are Leonard Shelby played by Guy Edward Pearce, Natalie played by Carrie-Anne Moss, and Teddy played by Joe Pantoliano. This movie was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Screenplay and Best Editing. Box office receipts were about $25.5 million in the United States.

Fourth, I will introduce the story a little. Despite Leonard’s fragmentary memory, he attempts to take revenge on the criminal who killed his wife. Leonard injured his head when he wrestled with the criminal who killed his wife, and suffered from the after effects of only 10 minutes of memory. Because of this condition, he forgets what happened around him so he takes a photo of the face of the people he meets, writes down what happened and tattoos himself. This movie has a mixed up time sequence and is divided into a color part and a monochrome part. The time sequence of the color part is reversed, and the time series of the monochrome part progresses normally. I think it’s a difficult movie that anyone can’t understand just by watching it once. That’s why I can’t recommend this movie to people who are not good at suspense or thinking.

And finally, I will explain my impression of the movie. To be honest, I ended up watching this movie without understanding who was the culprit. After that, I saw a website that commented on “Memento”, and somehow I understood it. I think the movie director wants to convey more than just revenge on the criminal who killed his wife. “Memento” means “remember” in Latin. I interpret the meaning of this word as a free translation and include the message, “If you forget it, it doesn’t make sense, so you should do what you want to do when you want to do it. And you should believe in yourself.” It was a very difficult movie, but I learned that I shouldn’t easily trust everyone around me. And I usually only watch romance movies, so this suspense movie felt fresh and very interesting.
